The Teleki Burial Vault

The Teleki Burial Vault in Dumbrăvioara was built in baroque style at the beginning of the 19th century by Teleki Sámuel, chancellor of Transylvania. The building was erected above the graves of the chancellor’s descendants. The building of the vault was contracted to craftsmen working on the Teleki Library of Tîrgu-Mureş. The work was led by the constructor of the famous Arieş bridge, János Követsi, the roof was realized by a carpenter from Rupea, who used to work on the construction of the Teleki Library’s roof and used to build mills in this period in Dumbrăvioara. The grave markers are lined in three rows facing the entrance. In the burial vault there rests the chancellor and mostly his direct line descendants, as well as their family members. The descendants of Teleki in Dumbrăvioara were buried here through one and a half century. The last burial took place in 1916, with the death of the Africa-explorer, Teleki Samu.
